The 9th special issue

Food is the single strongest lever to optimize human health and environmental sustainability on earth. However, the volatility of food supply chain is currently threatening both people and the planet. An immense challenge facing humanity is to provide a growing world population with healthy diets from sustainable food systems. With the industrialization of agriculture, intensively produced agricultural products are being processed and delivered through commercialized food value chains. These scenarios, combined with issues such as poverty, ultra-processed foods, food desert clusters, eating habit changes, and lack of proper diet information, etc., are exacerbating malnutrition problems (under-nutrition, over-nutrition, and nutrient imbalances). At the same time, the current environment and market fail to provide adequate incentives for farmers to implement sustainable farming practices, ultimately leading to an unsustainable agriculture. Therefore, development of food value chains that emphasize and strengthen sustainable and healthy diets, taking environmental and human health into consideration, can no longer be delayed.

The 9th special issue “Enhancing Sustainable Food Value Chains and Healthy Diets” of the FFTC Journal of Agricultural Policy (FFTC E-Journal) will focus on key challenges and share innovative solutions for enhancing sustainable healthy diet within the framework of sustainable food value chains in the Asia-Pacific region. This special issue aims to provide insights into policy frameworks, regulatory incentives, and capacity-building measures that contribute to improving distribution and logistics efficiency, enhancing the sustainable value chains of grains and legumes, vegetables and alternative meat sources for sustainable healthy diets, facilitating consumer information and awareness, and increasing consumers’ affordability and accessibility to sustainable healthy food.

We invite you to contribute to this important discourse!
