Call for Papers of 3rd Special Issue
Topic: Smart and resilient agri-food systems for integrating smallholder farmers into global value chains
The 3rd special issue of FFTC Journal of Agricultural Policy will focus on smart and resilient agri-food systems for integrating smallholder farmers into global value chains. The aim is to identify tentative ways to increase resilience through smart tools which can benefit smallholder farmers in the Asian Pacific region.
Smart agriculture is seen as potential means in strengthening management efficiency of the agricultural value chain. Many countries are implementing policy measures to promote smart agriculture through intensive inputs in R & D, development of digital infrastructure in rural areas, subsidies on equipment, farmer extension and establishment of a coordination system among value chain stakeholders. However, the adoption rate of smart agriculture is a bit low, especially in Asia. Reasons such as high initial investment costs, low reliability and inter-compatibility of equipment, as well as the lack of motivation are believed to be the contributory factors to smart agriculture’s low adoption rate. The limited capacity of smallholder farmers against massive environmental dynamics such as climate change is considered to be closely linked to the food security in both regional and global scale. A resilient agro-food system, assisted by affordable smart tools applications to small holder farmers, may ensure a stable agricultural production and a sustainable development of rural economics.
