Taiwan: Agricultural losses from heavy rain reach NT$80 million

2019.06.10

Agricultural losses from several days of heavy rain have reached NT$80 million (US$2.53 million), Council of Agriculture (COA) chief Chen Chi-chung (陳吉仲) said Thursday.

Chen told reporters that Kaohsiung and Pingtung in southern Taiwan suffered the heaviest losses at NT$23 million and NT$15 million, respectively.

Since May 17, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has issued several heavy rain alerts for most parts of Taiwan triggered by a series of powerful weather fronts.

According to Chen, watermelons and grapes were particularly affected.

To ease farmers' losses, the COA will provide natural disaster relief aid, assistance and guidance on health and safety in agriculture, organic fertilizer, and will roll out a new agricultural insurance scheme.
