The Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services announced the launch of the 2025 Citrus Cultivation Expert Training program, aimed at establishing customized citrus cultivation techniques suited to the region’s changing climate.
As climate change alters traditional agricultural landscapes, inland citrus farming, previously concentrated in Jeju Island, is expanding.
Currently, 152 farms across Gyeongnam Province cultivate citrus on 33.4 hectares, a figure expected to rise as fruit-growing areas shift due to warming temperatures.
To support this transition, the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences is investing 1.1 billion won across seven cities and counties, including Changwon and Tongyeong, to introduce subtropical fruits and develop specialized citrus production complexes.
The initiative aims to create stable production bases, modernize cultivation infrastructure, and ensure long-term sustainability for farmers.
